Aira Force and Grasmere

The hot weather continued in The Lakes throughout this week as it did across the country, most of what we did was done in the morning before we went back to the house to stay cool. Both these short walks are easily done in an hour or so and both enjoy plenty of cover, which kept the baking sun from us. The first was the usual up and around Aira Force walk, starting at the bottom up to High Force and back down. Nothing too difficult, the bottom parts of the waterfall are still out of action due to the fallen tree, however that has now been cleared (since our last visit at Easter) and they look to be constructing a metal walkway to replace parts of the path.

The second walk is the simple circuit of Grasmere, with refreshments in the village itself beforehand. I always enjoy this walk, its flat, great scenery and perfect for those days in between mountain days. This walk the scenery seemed to be even better than normal, the water sparkled and the reflections were pretty good. A lovely place to spend a couple of hours, one day I will extend the walk to include Rydal Water!!

The National Trust car park is down there by the building as despite meeting my Auntie and Uncle at 10am it was filling up quickly
Just as you reach the first glimpse of the waterfall itself you get this opening, giving views to the fells around Ullswater, including Place Fell on the left
They have made a bit of a clearing so you can see down to the waterfall through the trees
The first of the bridges over Aira Beck, this one is about half way up
High Force
Aira Beck burbling along through the trees
The rocks at the top the perfect spot for a sit when the water is low or…
Some selfies, my cousin jumps in from the left. My youngest looks happy enough
Yours truly and my uncle, he was father of the bride a couple of days before this
Glimpses through the trees as we walk back down to the car. From here we setup back at the house under a large umbrella with a bottle or 4 of beer to enjoy the surroundings
Starting out from Grasmere, and looking across a well manicured lawn of one of the hotels as we head out towards Red Bank
Loughrigg Fell across Grasmere
And as we leave the road and reach the waters edge we get views back towards Helm Crag with Seat Sandal rising to the right
Dunmail Raise is the dip between Helm Crag and Seat Sandal. The hotel at the far end of the lake is The Daffodil
Grasmere
The River Rothay as it leaves Grasmere and heads to Rydal Water
Silver How across Grasmere
After walking through the woods at White Moss and along the pavement by the busy A591, you reach this old boathouse, which makes for a lovely picture backed by Silver How and some lovely reflections
Across the fields in Grasmere to Helm Crag
St Oswalds church in Grasmere and back to the car after another lovely circuit of the lake
