Flat Tor

This one does as it says on the tin. It’s flat!! The area around it is fairly flat as well. As a result there are a number of river heads around these parts making a walk here an attritional affair. This doesn’t mean that its not very high, far from it. You are well over 500 metres up here, however the land around is all above that as well. The summit is quite small and you might wonder why you’ve bothered but the solitude level here is about as good as you’ll get on Dartmoor. The views are okay from this tor, across the mires towards Rough Tor and to the north is Cut Hill. Sandy Hole Pass can also be seen with Winney’s Down beyond. Flat Tor sits right on the edge of the Merrivale firing range (the posts pass through it) and any red flags will be seen on Rough Tor. So obey any warnings. To get here you have two options, either follow the East Dart river, past the waterfall and Sandy Hole Pass, then head left and up to it. The other is over Higher White Tor and past Tom Brown’s House, over Wildbanks Hill and across the soggy bit!!
