Gem Bridge

This is a very new bridge, spanning the River Walkham as it nears Grenofen and leaves Bedford Bridge. This bridge was built at a cost of around £2million and is for walkers and cyclists only. This metal structure was opened in 2012 and is around 200 metres in length, however there used to be an older wooden structure on this site which opened in June 1859. This is part of Brunel’s route from Plymouth to Tavistock, which included this bridge and the superb Grenofen tunnel, a short distance away.
