So this isn’t an actual castle, more a fort or prison. It was a notorious place, harsh punishments occurred here and many an inmate has stated that it is the harshest place on the realm. The castle/prison was built in 1195 and was used as a prison and court to administer the laws of the stannary towns on Dartmoor and was rebuilt in the 13th century to resemble the motte and bailey design, which stands to this day. There is a staircase inside but parts are now out of bounds due to stonework issues, but you can still see and feel what it was like in here.
