This church (St Mary’s) sits up the hill about half a mile from the village of Walkhampton. It is a grade 1 listed structure and was built in the 14th century, with more added in the 15th century. The church was built prior to the village, hence its strange location out on its own. The church house is from the 16th century, and the plaque of 1698 shows the likely extension to the house of the second floor. The use of the house was to brew and sell ale after the church services and also on route between Tavistock and Buckfast Abbeys, a collection point for the local tithes and council chamber. The house has original mullion windows on most sides and is easily the oldest house in the area. There is also a cross at the front of the church house.
