Beesands, Hallsands and Start Point

You’d have thought that having walked around Land’s End on a 3 day expedition that we’d be sick of having the sea on our left hand side. Not a bit of it, this was a revisit to Start Point for myself and a first proper look for Linda, in an area that never fails to deliver some stunning coastal scenery. The sun was shining, not quite as hot as it was in June but still very warm, with butterflies out in abundance around Start Point. It was a glorious walk in perfect weather and perfect company. As we rounded Start Point and headed to Peartree Point we spotted some dark shapes in the sea, first one, then two seals. In total 4 were in the area, and we spend at least 20 minutes watching them fishing in and out of the coves and pools. We eventually took ourselves away towards Lannacombe Beach and back via the lanes to Beesands, a superb walk and such a lovely area to walk in.

The rocky foreshore of Beesands
Looking north across Start Bay towards Dartmouth
Climbing over Tinsey Head on the way to Hallsands
And looking back
Start Point lighthouse can be seen and Hallsands is down on the right
The beach at Hallsands
There used to be a platform from which you could view the old village of Hallsands which was claimed by the sea, however that is now unsafe and closed as well so there is no view anymore unless you are out on that sailing boat
Plenty of Gatekeeper butterflies today
The climbing path takes us to Start Point car park, it was warm work walking up here
Magnificent views across Start Bay
The last section down the path to the lighthouse, the coastal path actually cuts off right before getting near the lighthouse, but we went right down to get a good look
Fine Red Admiral on nettles by the wall
And a Small Skipper, infact this section down to the lighthouse had thousands of butterflies including Gatekeepers, Red Admirals, Meadow Browns, Skippers and Marbled Whites
Start Point lighthouse and plenty of blue sea
Looking to Peartree Point from Start Point
One last look across Start Bay
We’d sat and had lunch here, one of the best lunch spots ever.
Start Point
A Marbled White, quite a few of these around today
Looking back to Start Point from Peartree Point
Mating Meadow Browns
Linda and Start Point
We were rounding Peartree Point and I quite liked this rocky view back
Now hello, this was a bit of a treat, not one
Not two
But actually 4 seals all in and out of the rocks at Peartree Point
We spent a good 20 minutes watching the seals before we tore ourselves away and headed towards Lannacombe Beach
Great Mattiscombe Sands is up first though
And looking back towards Peartree Point
Heading for Lannacombe Sands, Langerstone Point and Prawle Point are over there on the left
Lannercombe Beach
A Holly Blue butterfly
Heading towards Kellaton along the lanes
Looking down to the area holding Beesands as we walk the lanes back
Lovely sky as we walk the lanes
These look fed up
Start Bay and Widdicombe Ley
Back at Beesands
Start Bay looking glorious still at the end of a perfect outing

  1. Glorious! Love the butterflies, obviously, the seals too, but most of all the fantastic coastal scenery and the lovely colour of the sea. I’ve never walked a long distance coastal path, and I would love to, but, if the weather was half-way decent, I think I would struggle to resist the temptation to stop frequently for swims.
