Stenga Tor

Stenga Tor or Steng a Tor as it can be on the maps is a surprisingly boggy spot on Dartmoor. Having walked there in early October after a dry spell I struggled to find a way in that didn’t involve a bit of hopping or getting wet!! It’s an odd tor, perched on the side of the West Okement Valley and can be seen easily from the Dartmoor high spot of High Willhays. In fact from Stenga Tor you get a grandstand view of the high ground across the West Okement, its just a shame that it takes a bit of wading to get to the rocky outcrop!! The best approach ironically is from below (east) and if coming from that direction a crossing of the West Okement at Sandy Ford is possible. Anything to the north, west or south will involve wet feet more often than not!! Another way in is following the old railway track below Woodcock Hill (Hunt Tor) and up over Kitty Tor. This tor sits right on the edge of the Okehampton Firing range so obey the flags on Kitty Tor if they are flying.
