Legis Tor and Gutter Tor

It was well into spring and we hadn’t been out for an evening walk yet, so time to put that right. The plan on any evening walk is to keep the driving and walking distance down, find somewhere that is interesting or looks good in different light and might have a sunset. With a mainly cloudy sky I wasn’t thinking about the latter of these but concentrating on a shorter walk and very little distance from home. To be honest I failed a bit on the walking distance, as its a bit further than I remembered around this loop, but as it happened it meant we saw a fantastic sunset as we got to the car. Some Dartmoor squares are included on this walk as well, this being walk 55 on the Dartmoor 365 round 2, picking up squares S6, S7 and S8. We started by walking around the Brisworthy Plantation and heading towards the stone circle of that name, before reaching Legis Tor. We sat for a bit on Legis Tor taking in the wide views in all directions, before then heading off for Ditsworthy Warren. Two tors sit just up the hill from here, both scattered rocks, rather than a clumped stack. Eastern Tor is the better of these, with Whittenknowles Rocks more of a scattered clitter of smaller stones. Next up was Gutter Tor and the high point of the walk as we passed the trig point. All that was left was the simple walk across Ringmoor Down to the plantation. Whilst walking past Gutter Tor we’d seen the gap in the cloud by the horizon, and wondered whether the sun would make an appearance. It did as we reached the car, so we stayed an extra 20 minutes and watched a lovely sunset. Perfect end to the Friday of the bank holiday weekend.

All parked up, Cornwall in the distance, we head out for our evening walk.
Brisworthy Plantation on our right here, we would head up and around the trees to the right
As we turned the corner we saw a Roe Deer bounding away from us. Before disappearing around the plantation it looked back to check on us
A short distance away was the stone circle at Brisworthy. Legis Tor is far left and above the tree is Lower Trowlesworthy Tor. The middle distance is Lee Moor
On Legis Tor now, Saddlesborough is the high spot back left. You can see the V middle right of the Plym Valley. Another option for a evening walk if we get the weather.
We are heading that way next towards those trees, holding Ditsworthy Warren
A colouring of the skies in the distance from Legis Tor
Walking the path to Ditsworthy Warren, the River Plym wriggles its way towards Plymouth from up in these parts
Ditsworthy Warren House
The back of the Warren House. Legis Tor in the distance beyond Linda
Pointy Hen Tor from the Warren
Mum and foal
Eastern Tor or parts of it.
The River Plym on the right as we look up to Higher Hartor Tor, with Eylesbarrow back left
Nearing Whittenknowles Rocks and looking over to Gutter Tor, with Sheeps Tor behind and Leather Tor/Peek Hill behind that
Whittenknowles Rocks
Whittenknowles Rocks, not much really. But in the distance it looks to be glowing a bit.
Meadow Pipit
The orange grows in the distance, Sheeps Tor to the right, pointy Leather Tor further right
Gutter Tor
The trig point at Gutter Tor is about 50 metres from the tor, Plymouth Sound in the distance
The trig point is placed and maintained by the Dartmoor search and rescue team in Plymouth
Orange glow over Cornwall and there is a gap for the sun to appear
Brisworthy Plantation ahead and Linda looking at the glow to our right (and west), just maybe we might see something
Galloways with the sun glow beyond
Here it is, the sun starts to drop below the cloud line
Not quite sure what I did for this photo on the camera, love the layers in the rolling hills and the purple light coming from the sun. Sunset time
Brent Tor and its church silhouetted nicely
The sun’s glow lights up the trees of the plantation
Sun and cloud
Nearly gone
Now gone and lovely layers of land to finish, a real treat to have a bit of sunset as we reached that car

    • Yes the Warren house was used as named many years ago for rabbit warrens etc. It was also used in the Spielberg film War Horse as a filming location. Now owned by the army I think, they use it occasionally for camps
