Devil’s Tor

Devil’s Tor sounds far grander than it actually is, in reality this is a small grouping of low granite rocks which sits atop a vast reasonably flat area of Dartmoor. The best reason for visiting Devil’s Tor is to see the Beardown Man menhir one of the tallest of its type on Dartmoor. The views from this tor are extensive in distance, Fur Tor and Cut Hill can be seen to the north, Rough Tor (and its submarine!) to the north and east. Further round you have Longaford Tor and Princetown, with Great Mis Tor in a south westerly direction. To get here the best approach is from the starting point of Holming Beam, then to Beardown Tor and across to Lydford Tor. The next section is a boggy peaty trudge to Devil’s Tor. Devil’s Tor lies within the Merrivale firing range, please obey the warnings before heading out to this tor.
