Buckfast Abbey

Near to the town of Buckfastleigh in southern Dartmoor sits this Benedictine monastery. The first abbey was built here in 1018, followed by another on the same site in 1134. However in 1539 all the monasteries were dissolved, with the abbey being left as a ruin before being demolished. In 1882 the site was purchased by a group of Benedictine monks who refounded a monastery, the current abbey being finished in 1938. The current abbey has 13 monks on site and the Abbey is famous for its Buckfast Tonic Wine which is sold around the country,
