Such a good walk this one, if you have National Trust membership then start from the main car park beside the lake, something I try to use in lots of car parks up here. If not then there is another car park to the west just off the road to Coniston. Either way this is a lovely hour walk in glorious surroundings, with views to the Coniston range, The Langdales and up to Black Fell. In fact tagging on Black Fell will give you an extra hour to this walk and makes it even better. The colours on the trees weren’t too bad, but as I’ve said before the walks this week were a week or two early for the best that autumn can give. This was a lovely relaxing way to finish off my week up here, which put me on 163 Wainwrights completed, my first Wainwright book completed, in the Far Eastern Fells and only 51 to do. No need for a map on this post as it was a simple circuit of the lake.

As you walk around you get little slots of Tarn Hows, the colours aren’t quite full on autumn but the weather is great for this walk

There was barely a ripple on some parts of on the lake giving some lovely reflections
Wetherlam to the right and the Old Man of Coniston to the left, probably the best outlook of the walk around.
At the far end of the lake there is a little bridge, at this point you can branch off along a path heading for Black Fell or carry on around, this is the view from the bridge.

Its a great family walk, so good at all times of year. There;s a good display of daffodils in the spring as well.

We went up to Tarn Hows from Coniston earlier this year just before Easter and then on up to the top of Black Fell. Although I’d been to Tarn Hows a couple of times before I’d never carried on to the top of the fell. It was rather a revelation – it must be one of the best viewpoints in the south Lakes and we were lucky to catch it on a sunny day with good visibility. Bet it’s good when there’s snow on the high fells.

Such a simple little walk to add on Black Fell but as you say it punches above its weight were the views come in.

Always worth tagging on Black Fell as well, the views from there are very good for such a lowly fell
