Grimspound

Grimspound is a Bronze Age settlement on the eastern side of Dartmoor, it consists of 24 hut circles surrounded by a large stone wall which would have stood over 1.5 metres high. Grimspound was used as a settlement as far back as 1300BC the reasons are unclear however it may have been used as a defensive pound due to its locations at 450m above sea level. However being surrounded on three sides (it sits in a valley between Hookney Tor and Hameldown Tor) this is unlikely, it may also have been a cattle herding community. The views of Grimspound are best from either of the nearby tors, showing the size of the site which is around 4 acres.
