Legis Tor and Wigford Down with the boys

The Christmas walk, and due to working a bit between Christmas and New Year, it was a day or two later than it normally would be. The boys were also back together, for the first time since our walk up Snowdon in August. This was due to my eldest working every Saturday, he’s saving for driving lessons currently, so wants to build up his funds. This walk picks up part of my normal Christmas walk, from Cadover Bridge to Shaugh Bridge and back over Wigford Down. This time however we headed a different direction towards Ringmoor Down to pick up Legis Tor, which the boys hadn’t visited before and also see a couple of stone circles. Any visit to Wigford Down is always good and I love the views from here into the tors around Burrator. This place, for me, gives the feeling that you are standing on the edge of the moor and are looking into the good stuff. We then headed back to the car and headed home for a Christmas meet up with the family and their cousins, always a highlight of any year.

You go to get the boys and they are dressed like this, my youngest also included his Bovington Tank museum slippers
All parked up and we head off towards Brisworthy, looking here across to Lee Moor
Around the fishing ponds, which are the old clay working ponds and are a Dartmoor square
Here they are, more typically dressed for Dartmoor, Brisworthy just around the corner
Out on to the moor, the Trowlesworthy Tors are over on the right, Lee Moor is the high spot at the back and Legis Tor can be see behind the trees to the left of the boys
Saddlesborough highlighted against some bright sky with the darker clouds above us.
Brisworthy Stone Circle, Legis Tor ahead. A strong running stream between us and the tor with rain passing behind
Legis Tor
Without the boys in the way, the view to the Plym Valley, the dip in the distance, Wigford Down to the right of the dip
Pointy Hen Tor from Legis Tor
Further round and looking to Eylesbarrow at the back, the path running up the hill on the left is heading for Gutter Tor
It wouldn’t be a Christmas walk without some cake
It got a bit dark and moody when we were on Legis Tor
Now up on Ringmoor Down and its stone row, bits of blue sky are overhead now
And the stone circle
Brisworthy plantation on our left as we head for the road to Wigford Down
Climbing up to Wigford Down and looking back to Brisworthy Plantation on the left, with Lee Moor at the back
The tors around Burrator reservoir. Sheeps Tor is on the right
Wigford Down summit cairn. Cornwall is in the distance
To be fair they had spent most of the walk winding me up about me getting old and would I like a rest and should we head back as I looked tired etc etc, so this picture sums up the two monkeys.
I like a picture with some silhouetted trees
The car is parked by the trees down there after this short but lovely walk with my boys. Now to head back and meet up with the cousins
This was the ‘make a funny face’ photo. Cousins at Christmas!!

  1. Glad to have found your site. I enjoyed your About page. I was based in the north east and did much of my walking in the beautiful Lake District and Northumberland. I agree with your philosophy. Time spent outdoors is always enriching and it’s wonderful to be able to do it as a family. I hope you don’t mind but I’ve included a link to your site in my post next Monday. It’s not a traditional walk but a round up of my December.
