Bolt Head and Soar Mill Cove

So this was our last walk of 2024, which meant we’d walked 3 times between Christmas and New Year, which was a good walking end to the year. We decided to head to the coast and Bolt Head as the weather showed promise of maybe a bit of sunshine, rather than the low cloud misty rain which had beset home and the moors across the Christmas week, giving us two rather gloomy walks. I had been here once before in 2019 and as we pulled up in the car park the rain started pouring, we laughed at one rather enthusiastic dad who whilst running back to his car yelled for his family to get back in to “save themselves from a drowning”! We sat it out and headed off as it eased, passing the old RAF runways from WW2, walking the good path towards the edge of Salcombe. On reaching the woodland we started down the path initially to get a view of Overbecks garden, the National Trust place, before we climbed back up and followed the path to Sharp Tor. The coastal path is replicated below the tor and nearer to the water, but the better views are up on top, with fine vistas back into Salcombe estuary, across to Prawle Point and out to sea over Bolt Head. After a brew at Sharp Tor we headed off to Bolt Head, and despite only stopping 30 minutes earlier for a brew, we stopped again at Bolt Head to have lunch and enjoy the sunshine. Next was the fine high cliff path along to Soar Mill Cove, which is a lovely spot and had it been sunny still we probably would have stopped there as well, however the dull clouds threatened rain so we dragged ourselves up the, longer than expected, hill to Higher Soar. A short road walk had us back in the car and enjoying a coffee before heading home, a superb little walk and one of the best parts of the coastal path for me.

National Trust info board by the car park
And a description board about the RAF station here during WW2, two runways, that crossed where you park your car
The greener grass is the runway and the old airport buildings behind
A sunlit path to East Soar Farm, we would head left here however towards Salcombe
First look at Salcombe
And a better look, this time with the estuary in view and Overbecks National Trust garden and property in front of us
Out to sea and Prawle Point from Sharp Tor
Sharp Tor and a sunny Salcombe, the bank of cloud back left is across Dartmoor and would remain there all day.
But then again out to sea there were some horribly black clouds which thankfully never came our way, we are on the headland by Sharp Tor and that is Bolt Head over there
Now round at Bolt Head looking back to Sharp Tor and beyond to Prawle Point
A bit rough looking out to sea still
Smiley happy walkers
Off Cove
Steeple Cove ahead
That’s the Ham Stone on the left, in the distance we can see Rame Head near to Plymouth and Gribben Head at Fowey beyond that
Soar Mill Cove comes into view, Hazel Tor can be seen off to the right across the cove
The beach can be seen as we descend
Soar Mill Cove and the Ham Stone out to sea
Linda heads inland as the skies start to go gloomy again
These cows appear to be scrambling across rocky outcrops, maybe they got a mountaineering course for Christmas
As it says on the sign
and again on this sign. I might start a theme for the New Year to just take photos with signs in it so i don’t need to do narration with my photos in future 😁🤣
Looking back to Higher Soar as we arrive at the car park, Dartmoor appears to have unveiled some of itself in the distance for the first time in a week. So that was the last of 2024. Luckily it didn’t take us long to get going in 2025 with a gorgeous Dartmoor walk and lots of sunshine.

    • There’s a longer walk that takes you on this loop and then further down along the coast to Bolt Tail and Hope Cove, need a longer day for that but its a superb area
