Abergavenny (Y Fenni)

So the day after our Pen y Fan walk, we woke to sunshine (typical) but felt a bit sore, and given that we wanted one last good walk before leaving, we needed a day off between the two walks. So regardless of the weather we headed for Abergavenny for a more gentle day. We’d seen that there was a castle there and parks, so went for a mooch around to see what the place had to offer. Well for starters the castle is very good, and free as well, which is always a bonus. The parks were good as well and we had to visit Linda Vista Park to see if Linda could catch a vista! We had a look around the record shop and the market as well, all in all a lovely little town. It was a perfect gap day between two big walking days and a nice run up to visiting Linda’s daughter, that evening, which was one of the main reasons for coming to South Wales in the first place.

First a walk around the walls and a look at the castle from outside. At this point we weren’t sure if we could get in.
Walking the walls
Castle info board
The gatehouse, parts of the castle date from 1087, with lots added on in the 12th, 14th and 15th centuries
The Great Hall, site of an infamous massacre in the 1100’s
The south western tower, this was the part of the castle in the first photo at the start
Views from the castle
Pointy Sugar Loaf as we look out from the centre of the castle. A lovely walk around here, plenty of info boards and interest
A perfect place to visit, we headed in and sat for about 30 minutes on a bench, soaking up the sunshine. Not the biggest park but a very popular spot, with plenty of young families around.
We’d finished in Abergavenny and we didn’t want to head back to the hotel before heading off to Linda’s daughter. So as the weather was good we took a trip up to the Sugar Loaf car park, which is perched half way up on its southern side
Lovely views into the sun
Blorenge is opposite on the right over there and you can see the edge of Abergavenny on the left. In the distance will be England. But for now we enjoyed the views across this lovely part of Wales, in the sunshine, before heading off to see Linda’s daughter.

  1. Considering I’ve lived in the area for over 20 years and am a castle nut, I’ve never actually been to Abergavenny or its castle. Looks a fine place for a wander about. Must get off my behind and get down there at some point
