Easedale Tarn

As is our normal practice when the family gathers in the Lakes, we all walk, somewhere. In the past we’ve been up Barrow (twice), Silver How, around Grasmere and Easedale Tarn. This walk usually involves my auntie, uncle and cousins coming up from St Helens to join in. This was no exception as my cousins joined us for another walk to Easedale Tarn, which seemed like the best option staying at Thorney How. Summer 2026 was a blistering one, and today the mercury was heating up resulting in the youngest of the group choosing to dip in Easedale Tarn, without taking any swim stuff with them. All shorts were dry again by the time they reached the house, which probably tells you how hot it was. All in all its a great walk to the tarn and the last time I did this walk was almost 15 years ago and not one I even blogged about, so a lovely one to repeat.

We’d been walking about 10 minutes and had fine views into Easedale already

Approaching the dribble that was Sour Milk Gill
Above Sour Milk Gill looking over to Helm Crag and Gibson Knott, backed by Great Rigg, Fairfield and Dollywaggon Pike
Easedale Tarn and Tarn Crag

They’d decided to swim to the other side, then thought standing on the rock over that side making poses was a good idea. Other cousins have decided to join in. All had chosen to go in wearing the shorts they walked in, which had dried by the time we got back to the house
Crossing the outflow from Easedale Tarn to return via Stythwaite Steps

Far Easedale with Calf Crag at the end
Chaos as the youngsters in the group climb the rock on the way back, more posing on top of the rocks
Walking back through Easedale

Lancrigg which used to be vegatarian cafe but now does lots of weddings
Little Parrock and the end of the road, we’ve stayed in that one and when we did we walked to Easedale Tarn. Tarn Crag at the back

  1. Must be great to walk with all the family together especially on such a nice day. Easdale Tarn looks a good one for a swim. Reminds me of plan Mark has come up with to “swim” up or down that valley through Easdale, Codale and Stickle tarns and the rivers in between
