Hell’s Mouth to Tehidy Woods

So after having 6 walks in a row on the coastal path, we decided to keep the run going with another trip away. Only just back from Bideford and walks around Hartland Point, and we were off again, this time towards St Ives and Land’s End. We also had company, with the boys also coming, as they had finished their exams and we wanted to get away before the school’s properly broke up. We’d booked a small place near to St Erth and headed off early in the morning to bag a coastal walk on the way down. There is a longish section from Pendeen Point up to nearly Newquay, that I haven’t yet done, so we picked a spot along there that gave us access to a supermarket, so we could pick up some goodies for the stay. Linda found the right starting spot on the maps and the walk was fairly obvious from there, as I found a decent loop inland to take us back. As it was we enjoyed the coastal section so much, that we returned the same way. Its a very simple out and back, with hardly any climb or drop to worry over. Its also a very popular spot with locals, who clearly know this bit is here, giving such great views for very little effort. There are also plenty of places you can stop and turn around if you don’t fancy the 6 miles in total. A perfect little bimble spot to start this getaway.

Standing in the car park at Bennet’s Cove, looking down at Crane Islands. Navax Point is beyond the islands
Samphire Island is the opposite way, looks like another flatish walk in that direction as well towards Portreath, mental note made.
The bay here doesn’t have a name that I can see on the OS maps, but it runs from St Agnes Head (behind me) to Godrevy Point over there, I’m stood on Crane Castle at this point, a series of lumps and bumps here mark the area of the hillfort, which dates from the Iron Age
Emperor Moth caterpillar
Walking this way you’ll get a lot of this view, providing you come on a gloriously sunny July day like we did
Gatekeeper butterfly
Inland is the hills behind Redruth called Carn Brae
Lovely looking sea down there, as I look back to Crane Islands
A slight promontory gave me a great view back along the coast with Crane Islands nearest, then Samphire Island and then Gull Rock. The higher ground at the back is St Agnes Beacon
Same views, still gorgeous
Sat at Deadman’s Cove for a coffee, enjoy the view type stop. It was pretty ‘andsome as they say in the South West
Hudder Down view to Navax Point
And now Navax Point from Hell’s Mouth, there is a cafe behind me but there was a strong breeze blowing through and whipping up the car park dust so we didn’t linger
After Hell’s Mouth we carried on past the next point to the National Trust car park, Hell’s Mouth below
One last look to Navax Point, over on the left you can see part of St Ives Bay
Heading back now we stopped on Hudder Down for lunch, stunning views as I found another ledge to take a photo along the coastline
Linda walking back
Painted Lady. It was another day with hundreds of butterflies but after the last 6 walks full of them, I’ve given you all a break
Apart from this Small White!
The tide had been heading out on our walk, opening up more of the beaches below as we headed back to the car
Very easy walking + great views and scenery = happy walkers
Back at Bennet’s Cove, the tide being out had opened up a little cave below. We thought about heading down but had to head off to pick up food and then to the accommodation for the next 3 nights.

  1. I’ve walked several sections of that bit of coastline. We used to take regular holidays in Cornwall when the kids were small but we haven’t been back for many years. The beautiful images from the walk have me pining to go back. I don’t miss the crowded car parks and beaches though
