Lands End

So the boys were with us for one final day and we’d decided to head to Land’s End for a wander around. They had been 2 nights before, doing a whistle stop tour to St Michael’s Mount, taking a quick photo or two, then trying to race the sunset to Land’s End. They made the sunset but unfortunately for them, a thick ribbon of cloud had stopped the views to the sun sinking over the horizon. Still they stopped for 20 mins (no parking cost) and took photos and headed back to our cottage. We decided to let them have a proper look around the area and drove back two days later without a plan on which way to walk. On arrival we decided to head south first to Trevilley Cliffs, with their outstanding granite outcrops, before looping back towards Land’s End and beyond to Maen Castle and the left wreck of the RMS Mulheim. We mulled, moseyed and wandered, rather than walked, stopping and looking around without much of a target or purpose. It didn’t necessarily change my opinion that the place is just for tourists, given that it isn’t the best or furthest bit of any part of our land, unless south west becomes a thing, but it is Land’s End and somewhere were we all have at least heard of, even if it does have a theme park symbol marking it on the OS maps.

That’s the theme park and hotel up to the right, and this is the animal park, with some animals in it
Making our way quickly through the animal park out into areas with less people around. The weather wasn’t as sunny as hoped
The arched rock of Enys Dodnan, the Armed Kinght is the rock behind that and the lighthouse of Longships at the back
Trevilley Cliffs
Across Nanjizal Bay to Carn Les Boel
There was a bit of wind and the sea had a bit of white foam about it
Fantastic view across Nanjizal Bay at the back is Gwannap Head
When myself and Linda walked around the coast here in 2023 this was our spot, we had lunch here waxing lyrical about the granite stacks sticking up from the sea. A stunning place.
The boys had picked this spot for their lunch
Granite stacks up from the shoreline to the sky
Heading back towards Enys Dodnan and Land’s End
Lovely shot of Enys Dodnan, Longships, the seas and a bit of sunshine
As always the boys with a sensible photo at Land’s End
That’s the first and last cafe down there. Longships behind
Looking to Cape Cornwall
RMS Mulheim, a German cargo ship which ran aground in 2003
Maen Castle, here was an iron age hillfort not far from Land’s End
Linda taking photos of the scenery, Cape Cornwall in the distance
Making our way back to the car, Land’s End theme park left and the cafe right
On our way back we’d looked at the weather, constant drizzle was the order of the day, so we decided to ditch the coastal walk and instead pick up another National Trust property, this is Trerice an Elizabethan Manor House
From the front
And the back
The cafe is in the barn at the back
We both quite liked Trerice, the gardens were very good and the inside had enough interest and rooms to keep us looking for a couple of hours. From there it was an hour or so back to home and the end of hour costal adventures, which had meant 9 coastal walks in a row, definitely a PB for myself. Next we would rest a week or two and then look at Dartmoor again, with some tough walks!

  1. Lands End is a spectacular place with some amazing views and coastal features. Quite why someone decided what it really needed is a Theme Park is beyond me!
