Bideford to Instow

The boys had both finished school, well my eldest had finished his GCSE’s a month earlier and my youngest only had an activities week to do before his summer holiday, so basically he was finished as well. We headed up for another night in Bideford, using up some Christmas hotel vouchers we had. We’d previously stayed in Bideford and done a lovely walk around Appledore to Westward Ho! This time we decided to head the other way out of Bideford, in the direction of Barnstaple, we crossed the bridge and walked in the hot sun up towards Instow, in doing so we saw a bus heading the opposite way back towards Bideford. A quick internet search had us lined up nicely for a bus back, something that the boys were very keen on, and also myself considering my feet and the issues I was having with Plantar Fasciitis (it was after this walk that I started to walk every other weekend and use some ibuprofen to help the swelling ligaments). The walk was all tarmac path, it nicely rounds the Torridge estuary and I was pleased to have ticked this part off. It leaves me with a long section towards Barnstaple (which may well be the same tarmac path) but if there is a bus it will be possible in one go. This part was a lovely walk with the boys and very easy to complete, shame we probably didn’t walk off our large breakfast, with getting the bus back, but the boys were on good form and we sped along the short distance. Not the most memorable part of the whole path but one of the easiest.

Starting on the Bideford side of the Torridge and heading for the bridge down there
Bideford Long Bridge
The tide was clearly out and we would walk the other side of the estuary and under that road bridge downstream
Looking back to the Long Bridge, we’d made and error here and stayed on the path riverside of the flats, don’t do that, follow the road and the coastal path signs to pick up the right route, or you end up retracing your steps
On the right path now and looking back again to Long Bridge
Under the road bridge, carrying the A39 over the Torridge
Marshy margins by the river

Torridge estuary starts to widen as we near the sea, Appledore is in sight on the left
The Harland and Wolff shipyard at Appledore
More of the Torridge estuary, up that way the River Taw meets the Torridge and flows into the sea, the Taw starts on northern Dartmoor
Appledore across the estuary
The old Instow railway station
Instow, we walked a short distance along before turning right and uphill to look for the bus stop
Firstly we look back along the Torridge estuary, Appledore shipyard over on the right

You’d think they would be happier being on the bus, but they always love a photo. The end of a lovely walk and a lovely night away with my boys.

  1. The female half of my family are good at looking happy in photos but the male half always look grumpy. Reading Mark’s comment I can confirm that he always looks miserable in any photo I have of him!
