Christow, Kiln Down and Rowdon Rock

So we were into the middle of December and wanted to keep a little run going, were we had walked each weekend for a few now. Our efforts in October and November had revolved around moving house, so it was nice to be back in a bit of a normal routine. This would be walk 65 on Dartmoor 365 round 2, and this one includes F22, G22 and G23. Looking at the weather, it was forecasting pretty low cloud over the main part of the moor and even some persistent drizzle, especially out west. So with that we headed east, where it at least looked that we would get some clear tops and maybe drier weather. We hit the jackpot with sunshine and clear blue skies, whilst the distance views into the moor had a thick bank of cloud. This walk picks off a few Dartmoor 365 squares as well as some less frequented rocks and tors, it can be a lovely area and in this weather it was the perfect choice. We started out with the long pull up Bennah Hill to Kiln Down and its tor, this track just kept going and going, up and up and we were relived when we hit the top. After picking off the tor we headed down and through Bowden Farm before picking up the lane to Higher Hole, Middle Hole and Lower Hole (the three holes!). After passing a noisy kids party we reached Rowdon Rock, disturbing a herd of deer in the process. We soon reached Bridford and left via a lane that I’d not walked before, picking a footpath through some cottages, marked on the map. Rookery Brook Tor looked good, standing proud without its usual summer greenery, which cloaks this fine high rock. All that was left was a simple lane walk back to Christow and its church, the hope of a pint in the Artichoke Inn was dashed with the sign telling us it was closed until January!! Still the walk was superb and the weather, a real bonus. This will be the last post before Christmas, so I’d like to wish all of you a Merry Christmas, and hopefully you can all get some good walking in over the festive period.

Parking is normally very good here in Christow, this playing field has a decent sized car park and I can imagine that unless football or cricket is happening here, then you should be fine. As you can see blue skies above and sunshine is hitting the ground in this corner of east Dartmoor.
Village sign, there has been a new community shop opened in the car park, so alongside the church and pub, they have 3 fine amenities to keep the village thriving.
Rolling fields of east Dartmoor
Glorious views as we climb Bennah Hill. Haldon Forest in the distance
Those with a keep eye will spot Lawrence Castle (Haldon Belvedere) a large white tower situated by Haldon Forest. On this photo it is just to the left of the tree, right side of the photo, on the horizon. You’ll likely need to zoom in a bit to see it, but walking up Bennah Hill it was easily seen
Hazel catkins
I love trees this time of year, you get to see their shape, and set off by some blue sky behind, makes them look superb
As we reached the top of Kiln Down we could see the bank of thick grey cloud sitting over the majority of Dartmoor. Driving home later on we hit the drizzle and gloomy conditions that had sat within this miserable weather. Luckily for us the cloud bank didn’t budge all day, so we enjoyed plenty of sunshine
Hopping over a stile to pick up the path to Bowden Farm, we first found Kiln Down Tor in a copse of trees
Kiln Down Tor
We sat here for lunch, again enjoying the shapely trees
Not having my proper camera to hand, meant I had to use my phone, when I saw this buzzard sat on the fence ahead of us. Once he’d seen us he was off
This is Great Stone, it sits in a field all on its own, and when looked at closely, it resembles one of those creatures out of the film Tremors
We are heading behind us here, to Bridford
We pass Higher Hole and reach Middle Hole, we would walk through this gate and along a path towards Lower Hole. Three Holes is a Dartmoor 365 square
More of Middle Hole
Passing Lower Hole and we get a view to the village of Bridford
Rowdon Rock, we had already disturbed a small group of deer to get here, in theory this is on private land, but a bit of mild trespassing by crossing a stream and walking 50 metres will get you here
Rowdon Rock
Bridford church, the pub is next door to the church. Another lovely little village
Sulphur Tuft maybe?
More fungi, no idea on this one
Daffodils already!!
We’d found a fun path steeply down hill which passes Pook’s Cottages. One path was blocked by a downed fence due to Storm Darragh, so we went the other way and followed the road. Luckily from the road, in the winter, the looming rock structure of Rookery Brook Tor sticks out from the surrounding woodland
Rookery Brook Tor, the brook of that name runs between me and the tor
Edward 7th post box near to Rookery Brook Tor, this would have been placed here between 1901 and 1910
As you can see however its hardly in a village or popular place
Late sunshine still striking the fields and hills here
More rolling hills around Doddiscombsleigh
Back into Christow now and Linda finds a water pump
Unfortunately the Artichoke Inn was closed until January, so no pint for us this time
St James’ of Christow
Inside the church
And a list of all the vicars back to 1259, some were vicar here for 55 years
As we walked today, we picked up a few bits of holly bush, red berry bushes and fir tree to make a wreath at home. Being competitive types we both made one, and then put a poll on Facebook as to who’s was the best. The winner would get a place adorning the front of the house. As you can see Linda wins with her creation now nicely placed by the front door
Mine is on the shed!! Merry Christmas everyone
