Shaugh Beacon and Cadover Bridge

So I have an apology to you all, I’m sorry that I said I was fed up with the grey cold dank overcast weather we’d had for the last few weeks. From the minute I hit publish on that walk the weather has clearly gone, right Steve, your wish is my command. Lots of rain and windy, with the exception of the super sunny day yesterday, when I was cleaning my car instead of walking! Today was no exception as the forecasts said a very windy spell and heavy rain would sweep in again. Certainly it rained, windy, not so much. It seems that the forecasters today are more concerned with naming a storm, than they are getting the forecast accurate, as they react to a slight breeze with a yellow weather warning. I’d even class todays rain as normal heavy rain, hardly weather warning territory. Still we got a soaking as I planned an early ish walk, hoping to be back before the worst hit. We were sort of successful, as the second half of the walk was very wet. We set of from Cadover, through North Wood, before we hung a left up to Shaugh Beacon, the long path down into Shaugh Prior was pretty muddy and slippy, but we stayed upright. Next we walked through the village, stopping in the church porch for a coffee out of the rain. All that was left was simple lane walk to the car again, 3 miles and back in the car by 12.30pm, got to be our earliest finish to a walk!

So far in our garden we’ve lacked the normal birds, sparrows and robins, blackbirds and blue tits, none of that for our garden. For a while I thought this was a sparrow, but it turns out it could well be a Meadow Pipit. To go with out Pied Wagtail that’s two nice additions to the garden. I won’t show a wider picture showing the dying grass, due to leather jackets, they are an unwelcomed visitor
On with the walk, and a damp Cadover Bridge
North Wood and the River Plym as we walk towards Shaugh Beacon
The river wasn’t overly high here, but I can imagine it will get higher with the amount of rain falling during this walk
Linda walking through North Wood
The path through the wood is called the clay pipe path, as they clay was pumped off the moor to Shaugh Bridge and the train lines
Love the bare trees in this woodland
Inspection chamber in North Wood
Stepping out of North Wood you get views to the Dewerstone across the Plym Valley. We would turn left here and head uphill
The rain came down more heavily across Shaden Moor as we reached Shaugh Beacon, we didn’t linger long and chose to drop down left towards the village of Shaugh Prior
From the otherside, looking up to Shaugh Beacon
Reaching Shaugh Prior via a very slippery path, we spotted the only colour of the day in this crocus
The new cross in Shaugh Prior on the left, with the church in the distance
The new Shaugh Prior cross by the Village Hall
The White Thorn pub in Shaugh Prior
St Edwards in Shaugh Prior, we would stop for a coffee in the porch to drip dry off a little
Inside the church and some respite from the damp stuff
A stunning top to the 15th century font
The original Shaugh Prior cross is further along the lane at a junction
Getting wetter as we head along the lanes for Cadover Bridge
Shaden Moor Cross as we hit the home straight, the rain at our backs here coming down a little harder than previously
Back at Cadover Bridge and time for a coffee in the car to warm up. We found out which parts of out kit leak a bit. Need to reproof the jackets and trousers for starters!!

  1. Blimey, it looks very wet by the end. We were anticipating a downpour, but I managed a 5 mile local walk with very little rain at all. It did eventually get wetter, and windier, but not to the extent the forecasts suggested.
