Pew Tor, Walkhampton and Sampford Spiney

A walk that suits the winter weather, with plenty of lanes, villages, Dartmoor squares and a short dart on to Dartmoor proper for a couple of tors, before leaving via the lanes again. This walk is number 39 of my second round, picking up O4, O5, P4, P5 and Q4. The walk started from the little village of Walkhampton before we headed down to Huckworthy Bridge and then onwards to Sampford Spiney and the church there. We then headed out to Pew Tor just as the rain started to fall, we managed to find a nice overhanging boulder for lunch. Looping back to Sampford Spiney we headed downhill to Ward Bridge before climbing again along more lanes and finally reaching the Walkhampton Church and House. Overall we were pretty lucky with the weather considering that for a month and a half we’ve had far more rainy days than dry ones, here we just had the one shower at Pew Tor. A lovely corner of South West Dartmoor, and an area we will come back to again this winter as there is another walk around Horrabridge and up on to Plaster Down to complete.

In Walkhampton and our first Dartmoor square is ticked off with this village. That is the village war memorial cross in view.
And the pub, with Linda already striding out along the lanes. We would frequent the pub in 4 hours or so
One of my favourite signs
Recently I seem to have misplaced my Nikon camera, I can’t for the life of me remember where. The walk out at Holywell was the one where I noticed it had gone and can only assume I’d left it in the bus stop in Crantock where we had a coffee, but I can’t remember anything. Linda has kindly lent me her Lumix but it is taking a bit of getting used to as I over expose the distance views here at Huckworthy Bridge
What was the Parlby Arms, now a cottage
Huckworthy Common Cross, we would head to the right here towards Sampford Spiney
Views into Dartmoor, with Ingra Tor to the left of the gate. I love how this picture shows the patchwork green fields running up the the moorland
Again an over exposed photo, this time of Sampford Spiney Church
Inside the church and the rain was dropping a bit so we sat in the porch and had a coffee
Fancy grave by the church in Sampford Spiney
The village green with the cross, the old school and church at the back
Heading up to Sampford Tor
Sampford Tor and plenty of Dartmoor ponies
Peek Hill on the right with Sharpitor, Leeden Tor in the centre. Swell Tor on the left
From our lunch spot a view to the Staple Tors and Great Mis Tor. We headed straight here as it was raining at this point
Once we’d eaten and the rain had ceased, I took a few photos of Pew Tor. Here with views to the mast at Princetown
Pew Tor all the way to the sea and Plymouth Sound
Pew Tor is up there at the back as we join the lanes down to Sampford Spiney again
Now down to Ward Bridge
Ward Bridge, I have no idea why this bridge has round holes either side of the main arch
Heading up the lanes from Ward Bridge and you get views back across to Pew Tor
Criptor Cross, we would head right here
Gnomes at Eggworthy Farm
At the back is the Staple Tors with Great Mis Tor to the right and far right is Pew Tor
Walkhampton Church House, old Tudor mullion windows and the cross on the right hand side
The cross
Walkhampton Church. This church was in place well before the village. Unfortunately despite the signs saying it was open, it wasn’t so we couldn’t get a look inside. All that was left was a walk downhill along a path and across a field to the village.
A pint of Mena Dhu for me (not Proper Job as the glass says) and a cider for Linda in the Walkhampton pub. A fine way to end a lovely walk

    • I’ve posted on the village facebook group and the Cornwall lost and found but no luck. If I’m completely honest I don’t remember seeing it in my bag at all that day. Just have no memory of when I had it last.
