Sale Fell

So here I am, potentially my last visit to the Lakes to bag new fells from the Wainwright 214 list. I needed just two walks to finish off the list, and join the ever expanding number of members, who have completed them all. Not that this is planned as my final ever visit, if all went well, as there are other options to do walks around the Outlying Fells, Birketts or just do the list again and help the boys and Linda fill in more of their own list. But for now we shall let that lie, and see how the weather behaves in letting me pick off my final 3 fells. Before all that however, we had the arduous 400 mile drive north and wait around to get into our house for the week. This was the family holiday and 16 of us were descending on the National Park, so we need something big, which turned out to be a former hotel in Borrowdale, and it was lovely. The journey up wasn’t too bad and we seemed to be ahead of the busiest of the traffic, arriving in Lakeland around 1pm. The next choice was what to do to pass the time until 5pm (our time to enter the house), the obvious answer is a walk and a choice of one of my favourite lower fells. I came to Sale Fell first in October 2015 so I was well overdue a revisit, plus the boys and Linda hadn’t done this one, and it was not too difficult after a long drive. We parked up and ate our lunch before heading off through the gate, reaching the bench in no time. We turned left to follow the path as it gently contours around and upwards, giving great views down to Embleton and Lake Bassenthwaite. Turning right at a fence we headed steeply upwards and after a bit of huffing and puffing made the summit. We didn’t linger too long before following the superb grassy path back down and around to the right to the bench again. We then headed to Wythop Church to have a proper look in this little gem of a place. All that was left was the short walk back to the car, then into Booths for some shopping and off to our home for the week. The only downside was I managed to pick up a tick on this walk, the result of wearing shorts and wanting to stay comfortable on the long drive I guess. But this doesn’t detract from a superb little fell.

We’d sat in the car and had our sandwiches for lunch before booting up and heading off through the gate, the boys are keen and already away.
Myself and Linda are happy to be back in the Lakes, after our superb May visit earlier this year.
Some dark clouds above but it never got close to raining on Sale Fell. That’s Binsey in the distance and another good one to do when you have a couple of hours to spare. The edge of Lake Bassenthwaite is also in view
The Vale of Embleton and the village of the same name is over there. I think the hill at the back is Watch Hill
My youngest has found the bilberries, and clearly this isn’t his first handful
Some very angry skies over Skiddaw with Dodd just about clear the cloud to the right. Thankfully none of that came our way as we now start the climb up to the summit
A view from higher up to Binsey again
Dramatic skies looking over to Lord’s Seat, Broom Fell and more, from the summit of Sale fell
Ling Fell is over there on the left, another good low one to do. We had a mooch about on the summit for a bit before following the grassy path down
Summit selfie, no comment on those two at the back
The sweeping grassy path which heads down in the direction of Ling Fell and the Vale of Embleton
The path turns as you hit the wall to head around the front of Sale Fell again towards Wythop Church. Ling Fell up to the right
The Vale of Embleton again
Sale Fell above us as we follow the path
Lovely views in front of us as we make our way down
Wythop Church
And inside, according to a stone by the entrance the church dates from around 1613
A short walk back to the car and past many of these harebells
Before long we were in our house for the week, and these 4 were ready for their tea!! The weather for the week had some promising parts and other not so promising parts. The next day looked to be the best of the week by far so Blencathra and the Halls Fell Ridge was on the agenda, before a trudge to Mungrisdale Common. That would give me two of the three I needed. The next post will let you know how we got on.

  1. We did Sale Fell together with Ling Fell a few years back, nice route for a day when the high tops are in the cloud. Still plenty of Wainwrights left for me to complete, doubt I ever will.

    • Sale Fell is nice and simple, a little fell with plenty to see from the summit. Also worth a walk out to Rivings or Lothwaite as well to get a better view down to Keswick/Bassenthwaite Lake
