The first walk of the New Year and unlike last year, where we’d walked 3 times by this point, this was our first one. A mix of bad weather and Linda picking up a bad pain in her neck, had meant we’d stayed away from walking. We also chose a short route with very little in the way of difficult ground, so we didn’t worsen any injuries or neck pain. The area around Corndon and Yar Tor is a good area for this, plenty of high ground, or what appears to be high with long distance views, without too much need for steep climbs and descents. This would be walk number 43 of my second round of Dartmoor 365 squares, picking up M13 and N14 and finally the good sunny weather, so prolific in every part of the country since the start of December, had finally reached the soggy South West. I’d become a bit annoyed by lots of pictures showing cold crisp days in Yorkshire, Scotland and the Lakes and then lots of blue skies and snow as the New Year came around. Finally we had a bit of sunshine on the moor so we headed out, it was probably the first clear and decent day we’d seen in a long while, so we wanted to enjoy it. I’d checked and double checked the weather, with the best of the weather on the eastern side, and any cloud on the west. As it was it turned out to be the opposite of that, with clear weather on the west and cloud above us. However on this route, eventually the cloud disappeared and the sun shone for us. A lovely little walk taking in some lovely tors and Dartmoor 365 squares, and when the sun shines it is lovely around here, with valleys plunging below and views all the way to the high hills and tors to the north. Originally I had planned on a slightly longer walk, taking in Sharp Tor as well, but that one can wait for another day as this little 3 miler suited us just fine.
We’d driven through sunshine, then some cloud, then thicker cloud and ended up here. Grey clouds overhead with sunny conditions in the distance. Still the views were good to Sharp Tor beyond the car park. We were heading behind me to Yar Tor.Views to the west, towards Princetown and some blue skies and sun.Yar Tor summit is only 10 minutes from the carThe summit of Yar Tor has this spiral shelter, although it could do with being a bit higher to keep out any keen winds. Some of the lower outcrops of Yar Tor and views to the Princetown mast to the left and Longaford Tor in the centreBack towards Sharp Tor and sunshine in South Hams beyondLinda looking down towards the hamlet of Sherwell, the Corndon Ridge above to the right. A bit grey in the distance, but the wind and weather was coming from that direction (not planned on the weather forecasts) hence the cloudy conditions on this side of the moor.Down in Sherwell now, a Dartmoor 365 square and I noticed I’d put the camera on portrait mode, hence the blurred edges to the photosWalking up to the Corndon Ridge and Cathanger Rock is ahead of us, Linda is already on her way there, I’m guessing this is due to the fact that I’m carrying the rucksack and refreshments and she has nothing to weigh her down!! I’ll let her off with her back neck though. Now this looks better, sun over Hameldown and its heading our wayCathanger RockNew Year walkersSun burst as we reach Corndon North TorCorndon North Tor, with Corndon Tor behind on the left. A lovely way to finish this short but very enjoyable bimble.
This was a good little walk to get us back into things after the New Year, we seem to be back in the groove with walking each weekend now so more posts to come this week
I’ve come across a couple of those spiral summit cairns on my recent wanders in Mid-Wales, having never seen them before. You’re tight that last photo is a good one!
Back in 1979, hundreds of folk camped up there to protest about the gassing of badgers.

Pleased there was none of the gassing going on whilst we were up there

A walk doesn’t have to be long to be beautiful, does it?

I’ll look forward to them. We’re finally out walking again, after 3 weeks of flu!

Plenty of exercises and stretches over the next week or so seems to have sorted her neck nicely. Back to normal again now
