A walk out of my most visited starting spot. I’m a fan of the tors out the back of Norsworthy Bridge, especially as Burrator is just so popular but 10 minutes after leaving the car there is nothing but silence and the odd sheep breaking the quiet. The summit of Down Tor is a great place and the stone row behind is one of the best on the moor. On this walk I also visited the Yellowmead Stone Circle, my first visit here and I was very impressed. Four concentric stone circles and for me the best stone circle on the moor. So that’s the best stone row and the best circle in one short walk. For history the south moor is far better than the north moor and the tors aren’t too bad either.
Start – Burrator parking |
Route – Middleworth Tor – Snappers Tor – Little Down Tor – Down Tor – Down Tor Stone Row – Hingston Hill – Combshead Tor – Cuckoo Rock – Deancombe Farm – Narrator Clapper – Click Tor – Yellowmead Stone Circle – Rough Tor (Burrator) – Narrow Tor – Sheeps Tor – Maiden Tor – Longstone Manor – Norsworthy Bridge parking |
Distance – 6 miles Start time – 10.30am Time taken – 3hrs 30mins Highest Point – Hingston Hill 371 metres |
Weather – Cloudy but dry |

Just up the hill from Middleworth is Snappers Tor and the first view back to Burrator reservoir with Sheeps Tor left

Now on Down Tor, always a pleasure to come up here, Hingston Hill, Combshead Tor behind and Eylesbarrow the high point to the left. Lee Moor back right

From Combshead Tor over Hingston Hill, which was the high point of this walk, Down Tor left and pointy Sharpitor back left

These lot followed me across an enclosure like the pied piper. I had no feed for them so they despondently trudged off.

In Roughtor plantation is Rough Tor, not much of an outcrop but fairly easy to find from the Sheeps Tor side

Narrow Tor perched on the side of Sheeps Tor with great views across the reservoir to Leather Tor and Sharpitor

Back on the wet lanes again back to the car after a fine walk. Lots of tors and history in a short distance.
Pretty much the same walk as I did a couple of years back (after reading one of your blog posts), and I loved it as well. So much to see a,though I didn’t know about the stone circle. Excuse for a revisit.

The stone circle is not on the OS maps which considering there is only one other 4 concentric stone circle on Dartmoor(Shovel Down) is a bit strange. Its a cracking spot
