Down Tor, Sheeps Tor and Yellowmead Stone Circle

A walk out of my most visited starting spot. I’m a fan of the tors out the back of Norsworthy Bridge, especially as Burrator is just so popular but 10 minutes after leaving the car there is nothing but silence and the odd sheep breaking the quiet. The summit of Down Tor is a great place and the stone row behind is one of the best on the moor. On this walk I also visited the Yellowmead Stone Circle, my first visit here and I was very impressed. Four concentric stone circles and for me the best stone circle on the moor. So that’s the best stone row and the best circle in one short walk. For history the south moor is far better than the north moor and the tors aren’t too bad either.

Plenty of puddles on the paths as I look across to Leather Tor

First tor of the day is Middleworth Tor

Just up the hill from Middleworth is Snappers Tor and the first view back to Burrator reservoir with Sheeps Tor left

Little Down Tor with Snapper Tor just down there, the same view from here as the previous photo.

And across to Gutter Tor

Now on Down Tor, always a pleasure to come up here, Hingston Hill, Combshead Tor behind and Eylesbarrow the high point to the left. Lee Moor back right

Down Tor and that view which is ever present

The brilliant Down Tor stone row

Hingston Hill summit

Combshead Tor with Sheeps Tor left, Burrator reservoir centre and Peek Hill right with Leather Tor

From Combshead Tor over Hingston Hill, which was the high point of this walk, Down Tor left and pointy Sharpitor back left

Cuckoo Rock, no cuckoo’s heard today though

These lot followed me across an enclosure like the pied piper. I had no feed for them so they despondently trudged off.

Deancombe Farm buildings

Narrator Brook clapper with Roughtor plantation behind

Its a short pull up to Click Tor with Combshead Tor in the sun opposite

The brilliant Yellowmead Stone Circle and Sheeps Tor behind

Gutter Tor on the right and Hen Tor in the distance

In Roughtor plantation is Rough Tor, not much of an outcrop but fairly easy to find from the Sheeps Tor side

Narrow Tor perched on the side of Sheeps Tor with great views across the reservoir to Leather Tor and Sharpitor

The cloud is down on the mast at Princetown, back left. Down Tor is centre right from Narrow Tor

Plymouth Sound over Sheeps Tor summit

Looking down to Maiden Tor, just follow the path

Maiden Tor

I headed off Sheeps Tor and back down to the reservoir road to the ruins of Longstone Manor.

A 10th century threshing platform

Back on the wet lanes again back to the car after a fine walk. Lots of tors and history in a short distance.

  1. Pretty much the same walk as I did a couple of years back (after reading one of your blog posts), and I loved it as well. So much to see a,though I didn’t know about the stone circle. Excuse for a revisit.
